Leduc County council approves 2016 budget, sets tax rates
May 17, 2016 — Leduc County council approved the final 2016 budget and set the 2016 tax rates at its special council meeting this morning.
Council approved an $83.4-million operating budget and $38.5-million capital budget, which represents a total tax dollar budget increase of approximately 1.37 per cent over 2015.
“We were challenged to hold the line on spending and find efficiencies in these uncertain economic times,” says Mayor John Whaley. “We approved modest, fiscally responsible increases to ensure we can continue providing residents and business owners with high-quality municipal services.”
The 2016 capital budget includes $9.9 million for the annual road surfacing program, $4.9 million for a building expansion, $2.4 million for capital equipment purchases for protective services, $1.2 million for bridge rehabilitation and $500,000 for parks and recreation purposes.
2016 tax rates
The modest budget increase resulted in a minimal tax increase for most land owners. Approximately 80 per cent of Leduc County property owners can expect a property tax increase of less than $100 over 2015, with five per cent receiving an increase between $101 and $250.
Property taxes are comprised of municipal taxes, other requisitions and the provincial education tax. Leduc County is obligated to collect the provincial education tax, as set by the Government of Alberta, as part of its property taxes. Leduc County’s total 2016 education property tax is $22.4 million, which represents an approximately 8.4-per-cent, or $1.7-million, increase over 2015.
“The marginal property tax increase ensures the level of service provided to landowners is maintained,” says Renee Klimosko, director of finance.
Tax notices will be mailed to residents no later than the last week of May 2016. Taxes are due by June 30, 2016.
